Gilt Shed building

In this building on the pig unit:

• This straw-based building houses replacement gilts before they enter the sow herd.
• Gilts are weighed every four weeks to check they are on track for a target weight of 165 kg at 240 days old.
• We adjust their feeding based on how their weight compares to the target weight.
• Gilts are socialised to people to ensure they are friendly and easy to handle when they are in the sow herd.
• There are also overflow pigs from the finishing shed, and hospital pens where sick pigs recover.
